Navracsics to Europe’s youth: we may disagree, but we must work together
Date: 03.12.2014
Newly-appointed European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navracsics has urged young people to work with him during his coming mandate, calling for a “strategic alliance” between his office and youth organisations. The call comes in light of criticism over his links to Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, which has been condemned for repressing domestic media outlets and NGOs.
In his first public appearance as Commissioner, Mr. Navracsics addressed over 250 youth delegates and journalists at the European Youth Forum’s General Assembly in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. He stated that “though there will of course be lively debates, and we may have had disagreements… I am honoured and happy to be here. I would like all young people in the EU to know: I am your Commissioner.” Calling for cooperation, he said that he wanted to place young people at the heart of policy making and urged them to engage him in “open and honest dialogue”.
